The Fowey estuary is considered by many to be one of the most attractive and unspoiled areas on the South coast. The river Fowey rises on Bodmin Moor and meanders through wonderful countryside towards Fowey’s natural harbour and the sea. Many fascinating hours can be spent just watching the river. The huge China Clay boats regularly pass by on their way to the loading wharf up-river and to see the tugs turn these boats in the entrance to Pont Pil (the creek just opposite the apartment window) is a sight well worth watching.
A wide variety of craft uses the river, from the water taxis and working boats, to ferries and pleasure craft, whether small dinghys or truly impressive yachts. Occasionally, even ocean liners pay a visit to Fowey!
Enjoy a river trip on the small steam boat or one of the motor launches, or hire a self-drive motor boat to explore the estuary. The Fowey/Mevagissey Ferry operates two trips a day in the season – or for those more adventurous, why not hire a canoe and discover the hidden secrets of the river – just perfect for watching birds and other wildlife.
For those who enjoy walking there are numerous local routes, many through land owned by the National Trust. Whether you enjoy a gentle stroll or prefer more of a challenge you will find something to suit your taste.
Fowey is very well placed to explore other parts of Cornwall and the Eden Project and The Lost Gardens of Heligan are both within an easy drive.
Fowey offers restaurants to suit all pockets, pubs, tea rooms and good quality shops. A general convenience store, delicatessen, fresh meat, wonderful local fish and good wines are all available within an easy stroll of the apartment.
